MOCKINGBIRD

Outside my window a mockingbird

Greets the coming dawn with song.

Its music heals a world gone mad

With viruses, with greed, with bickering

That will not yield to compromise.

I pray that it will keep its home

Amidst the branches of the live oak,

Stay the springtime season long,

Bless my mornings even to the coming

Summer’s heat, even through that

Final night it sings my soul to Heaven’s gate.
