Love in the Time of Corona (part I)

The smokestacks have stopped puffing

The birds are singing in the cleared air

Spring is upon us, magnificent and blooming

And here we are…just longing to be held

From moment to moment there is normalcy

But then the once dormant distances that lay between us

---abstractions we had measured with indifference---

Open and widen like oceans

Separating our hearts and our hearts’ intentions

We see now, painfully:

We have never done a thing in our lives

That had any meaning to us at all

Were we not holding hands with another
